I got a cast iron tortilla press for Christmas this year which is super nice and I like it but it’s kind of an awkward thing to be gifted when you’re traveling for the holidays. What am I supposed to do with this heavy thing? Mail it home? Stick it in my carry-on and drag it through the airport? (Spoiler: I did the latter.)
Anyway here’s how to make flour tortillas.
You will need:
- a tortilla press. (Mine is 8 inches.)
- a griddle
- mixing bowl
- measuring cups and spoons
- one ziploc sandwich bag
Ingredients:
- 3 cups of flour
- 1 teaspoon baking powder
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 1/3 cup fat (I used grapeseed oil. You can also use butter, etc.)
- 1 cup hot water (100 degrees F)
Steps:
- Combine all the dry ingredients and mix em up.
- Add the fat and mix so it’s kind of clumpy or flaky, like biscuit batter if you’ve made biscuits
- Slowly add the water and stir it up into a batter.
- Knead it a couple times
- Divide the dough into sixths and into fourths = twentyfour 2 - 3 inch balls
- let em rest 15 - 30 minutes
- turn your griddle on to medium high heat
- cut your ziploc sandwich bag in half along the edges
- Put a dough ball between the plastic sheets and smash it in the press
- slap it on the griddle, 30 - 60 seconds per side
- just keep doing that
